Coral reefs off Nilaveli, Pigeon Island, Hikkaduwa, and Kalpitiya offer colourful, accessible underwater exploration, from easy shore–entry snorkelling to wreck dives for certified divers. The east coast in particular is prized for clear visibility and healthy reef systems, while several dive schools offer beginner courses. Marine life ranges from reef fish and turtles to the occasional passing dolphin.
